The three friends spend part of Memorial Day, May 31, 2021 birding bird watching on the Bayfield Peninsula. A lone bird they had never seen before was swimming far offshore. After examining it with their telephoto lens and spotting scopes, they believe it was an Arctic Loon. There are five species of loons: the common loon which is seen yearly on Lake Owen as well as the yellow-billed, red-throated, Pacific and Arctic Loons. The Arctic Loon is a rare visitor to the continental United States and never seen before anywhere in Wisconsin. A expert was called who rushed to the sighting and confirmed the presence of the Arctic Loon making this the first documented sighting of this rare bird in Wisconsin.
